New traveller sites could be set up in Newark and Sherwood due to 'shortage'

Landowners are being encouraged to offer up their land for new gypsy and traveller sites in Newark and Sherwood.

The district council are calling on any landowners with suitable locations to get in touch.

The local authority said there is a shortage in the district .

It is discouraging the submission of land which has been the subject of a recent dismissal at appeal and, where sites have been previously offered.

It is part of the council's Core Strategy , which is looking at the future housing needs for gypsy and travellers in the area.

Matthew Norton, council business manager – planning policy, said: "As part of updating the housing and employment section of this document we are not intending to identify any new allocations, other than that for gypsy and traveller accommodation.

"If you do have a site we are keen to hear from landowners. If they are not sure about submitting please give us a ring."

The call follows a review of the council’s plans for the allocation and development of land throughout the district which is contained in its newly published Allocations & Development Management Issues Paper.

The paper sets out what will be included in the final adopted plan. This can be commented on up until 5pm on August 19, 2019, on the council's website.

A further consultation period will take place in October and November this year.
