New travel rules explained as Christmas cancelled for millions

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced huge changes tonight, effectively cancelling Christmas for millions of people.

Mr Johnson said the new strain of coronavirus had proven to be highly contagious and that the government were forced to act to stop the spread of the virus over Christmas.

The government had planned for the rules to be relaxed for five days from December 23-27 and for three households to be allowed to form a bubble during that period.

But tonight he announced big changes to those rules announcing that London and large parts of the South and South East were being put into Tier 4, with households unable to mix at all.

Areas in other Tiers will still be allowed to mix as three households, but only on Christmas Day.

We decided to take a look at the new travel rules and what that means for your Christmas plans.

Travel in Tier 4

If you live in London or the South East you should not travel.

Prof Chris Whitty, England's chief medical officer, said anyone packing a bag to leave the South East, should "unpack it now".

The new rules do not permit people to leave Tier 4.

Travel in Tier 3, 2, and 1

Across the rest of the country, the government has not brought in a ban on travelling between other tiers.

But the advice remains to think carefully before potentially exposing loved ones to the virus.

Travel to Scotland

Travel to Scotland from other parts of the UK has been banned by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Nicola Sturgeon said: "In order to reduce the risk of more of the [coronavirus] strain being imported into Scotland, we intend to maintain a strict travel ban between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

"Unfortunately, and I am genuinely sorry about this, that ban will remain in place right throughout the festive period

."We simply cannot risk more of this new strain entering the country if we can possibly avoid it.

"That means people from Scotland not visiting other parts of the UK, and vice versa.

"Cross-border travel for all but the most essential purposes is not permitted."

Travel to Wales

Wales are bringing forward their lockdown to midnight tonight.

People will be expected to stay at home, with travel only allowed for essential reasons.

Mr Drakeford said the easing of restrictions over Christmas had to be altered as people could not be exposed "to the risk of this new, more virulent strain of coronavirus".

He said: "We will therefore change the current rules, which allow two households to come together to form a Christmas bubble over a five-day period, so that they will apply on Christmas Day only.
