KOLKATA: Days after the New Town Kolkata Development Authority asked Sufal Bangla stalls not to occupy the footpaths to sell vegetables in New Town, citing encroachment reasons, a resident’s forum of New Town placed a memorandum to NKDA on Friday, requesting if the stalls could be allowed on the government land below the water tanks in the township.
“We have requested the NKDA chairman to see if the stalls can do business on the grounds below the water tanks or on the sides of the green verges. We don’t support encroachment of footpaths but there is a huge demand for the stalls and the residents were saying that they were being deprived of buying good quality vegetables at low prices since the stalls have moved out,” said New Town Citizens Welfare Fraternity secretary Samir Gupta.
“Footpaths in New Town can’t be encroached or occupied to do business. There is no problem if the stalls want to do business on any other suitable place like the sides of green verges and parks, or at the market places. We are asking the residents associations and block committees to identify such places and give a proposal to NKDA following which the stalls can start doing business at the earliest accordingly. Also, the stalls can be allowed to enter the gated communities. There is no problem if housing societies allow them to enter their premises.” said an NKDA official.
