New Tottenham manager latest: Paulo Fonseca in talks over three-year deal

Tottenham are in talks with former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca over their vacant head-coach position.

Fonseca is said to be the preferred choice of incoming general manager Fabio Paratici, who is set to take a leading role in all football decisions at the club, and is discussing a three-year deal with Spurs in what would effectively be a job swap with Jose Mourinho.

The 48-year-old resigned as Roma manager after two years in charge and was replaced by his compatriot Mourinho for next season following his sacking by Tottenham on April 19.

Spurs have turned to the former Shakhtar Donetsk manager after a succession of frustrations in their search for a permanent successor to Mourinho, including the breakdown in talks with former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte last week.

Tottenham also held talks with their former manager Mauricio Pochettino, who was reluctant to force his way out of current club Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and Hansi Flick, who is set to take charge of the German national team after Euro 2020.

Their leading target to replace Mourinho back in April, Julian Nagelsmann, agreed to succeed Flick as Bayern Munich manager from the start of last season, while Brendan Rodgers showed no interest in leaving Leicester.

Fonseca is said be open to moving to north London having previously managed Ukrainian side Shakhtar for three years before moving to Roma in 2019.

He led them to fifth and seventh in Serie A in his two campaigns in charge, as well as last season's semi-finals of the Europa League where they were well beaten 8-5 over two legs by Manchester United.

In Ukraine, he achieved three successive league and cup doubles with all-conquering Shakhtar and previously won the Portuguese Cup with Braga. Fonseca has also managed Porto in his homeland.
