New tool shows how much women would earn if they were men

Women still earn less than men on average across the country, here’s a new tool to show you exactly what the gap is in your area.

Today marks International Women’s Day, a celebration of the cultural, social, economic and political achievements of women around the world.

However, women in the UK still face a pay gap of 15.4% with the number increasing from a gender pay gap of 14.9% in 2020, according to Office of National Statistics data from 2021.

This is still down from pre-Covid levels, but shows more work needs to be done.

The gender pay gap varies by region, Leeds has a gender pay gap of 16.2%, with men earning an average of £32,570 a year while women earn £27,699 on average per year.

Compared to neighbouring Bradford, Leeds is less unequal with Bradford having a gender pay gap of 16.5%.

Use the tool for yourself below:

It takes data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings from 2021 to determine the average wages for men and women in the area.

It shows the average salary for men and women in the area so you can see where your salary lands compared to the average.

The tool also directly applies the pay gap showing you how much you would earn, based on the gap, if you were a woman or vice versa.

The pay gap itself varies by industry, according to the ONS the highest gender pay gap biased towards men is for production managers in mining and energy with a 45% pay gap.

Areas where the gender pay gap was at 0% includes occupational therapy and hairdressing.

Some jobs even had a reverse pay gap, with women paid more than men in careers like midwifery with women earning 55% more than men, although the vast majority of jobs were biased towards men.
