New tidal pool on the cards for north Dublin town

A new tidal pool is on the cards for Balbriggan beach after Fingal County Council announced €50,000 has been allocated to carry out a feasibility study.

The project is part of €150,000 in funding that has been granted to Fingal by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys. It is covered under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, which provides funding for the development of infrastructure for outdoor recreation to promote healthy lifestyles and adventure tourism throughout rural Ireland.

€50,000 has also been allocated for a feasibility study for universal access of the secluded Balscadden Beach in Howth, while €28,800 has been granted for the provision of new off-road waypoints on Balbriggan's historical walking trail.

Castleknock are also set to benefit from the scheme, with €23,400 allocated for the development of a historical walking trail. Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony said the funding is "wonderful news that will help us progress a number of worthwhile projects in different areas of Fingal".

She continued: "Being able to enhance local amenities for our communities and improve what’s on offer for visitors helps us make Fingal cleaner, greener and healthier for all. I am particularly excited to see funding going towards the development of a heritage trail in Castleknock that will leverage the footfall of visitors to Phoenix Park and Farmleigh House and give them an opportunity to experience the natural and built environment that can be found in the area."
