New Supercars race to be held in country SA

South Australia will host two rounds of the Supercars championship next year with Tailem Bend's yet-to-be-completed racetrack added to the series.

The 4.9 kilometre racetrack, known as The Bend Motorsport Park, will hold a round of the championships from August 24 next year.

The Adelaide 500 street race will still be held in March.

Organisers said they expected 50,000 motorsport fans at the new three-day event which includes two Supercars races, one run over 200 kilometres, the other 120km.

"This track is completely different to the street circuit used in the Adelaide 500," Supercars Australia managing director Matt Braid said.

"We're confident that with its world-class design the racing will be just as exciting and memorable for fans."

South Australian Supercars driver Nick Percat described the new track as "pretty amazing".

"There are a lot of young kids in Adelaide who have a dream of being a racing car driver but maybe haven't had the opportunity," he said.

"But now what they have done out at Tailem Bend is going to give an opportunity for the young guys to hone their skills."

The $110-million complex is currently under construction and the developers, Peregrine Corporation, said when finished it would cater for motorbike racing, drifting, karts, drag racing, driver training and off-road events.

The 18-turn racetrack is about 100 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and when finished would include a hotel and a caravan and camping park.

The state and federal governments have both contributed $7.5 million in funding to the motorsport complex.

"For Supercars to commit to another race in South Australia demonstrates massive confidence in our state and our ability to successfully pull off big ticket events," Premier Jay Weatherill said.

The 680-hectare site at Tailem Bend was previously Mitsubishi's test track.
