New stricter face mask rules come into force in Scotland

New stricter rules on wearing face masks have now come into force in Scotland.

Staff at certain workplaces like canteens are now required to wear a covering at work, under the new rules.

The stronger rules have come into line with those across the hospitality sector which require workers to wear a mask until they are sat at a table.

More measures will be brought in on Monday with masks expected to be worn in corridors and communal areas.

Under previous rules face masks are mandatory in shops and public transport.

But children and people with certain health conditions are exempt from the ruling.

As the laws on mask-wearing were beefed up, the First Minister stressed she wanted to “deliver some flexibility”.

Couples getting married will no longer have to wear masks at their wedding.

Nicola Sturgeon told MSPs yesterday that the couples would be exempt at weddings or civil partnership ceremonies as long as they are at least two metres from anyone else.

Sturgeon said: “This is a small but important change which I hope will be welcomed by anyone about to tie the knot.”

All other existing coronavirus restrictions remain in place.
