New streets in Cardiff set to be given Welsh names

New streets in Cardiff are set to be given Welsh names.

Streets in new developments would be given Welsh names which reflect the history of the area as the council works towards an equal number of Welsh and English street names across the city.

More main streets in Cardiff city centre and the Bay could also become bilingual under a new street naming policy agreed by the council's cabinet.

It means main streets which have historically not had Welsh names represented on signs, such as City Road, or Heol y Plwca in Welsh, could potentially be given bilingual names.

A council panel will consider new bilingual street names.

Existing streets in residential areas of the city, whether they are in English or Welsh, would stay as they are.

Council leader Huw Thomas told a cabinet meeting on September 26: "We know Cardiff is growing and this will make sure the streets reflect the historic origins of these areas."

From a public consultation of 2,248 responses, three in five (60.8%) agreed the council should work towards parity between the number of Welsh street names and English street names across the city.

A new street's name could be considered in a language other than Welsh in "exceptional circumstances" if it reflects the heritage of the area, a council report says.

The street naming panel includes council officers and representatives of organisations to advise on history and language when names are being chosen.

The street naming policy will come into force if it's endorsed at a full Cardiff council meeting.
