New statement on 'Super Champions League' plans which could affect Liverpool

The European Club Association have started discussing potential changes to the Champions League which include the prospect of promotion and relegation.

The ECA represents all major clubs in Europe and began talks with UEFA last week in regards to the structure of the competition.

But the question surrounds why exactly the ECA feel promotion and relegation would be a good idea for the Champions League? Teams such as Liverpool are set to be naturally impacted by the controversial move.

However, Andrea Agnelli, chairman of the ECA and Juventus, insists that there is merit to the idea and he feels it’s part of an important process which will see the clubs collectively drive change.

“We have now launched the process to develop a vision for the future of UEFA Club Competitions post-2024,” Agnelli said.

“This is the start of a journey that will see further and deep engagement with all professional game stakeholders, prior to reaching any formal decisions.

“There will be a new Super-Champions League in co-operation with UEFA. This is how football should be in the future and the talks will take place between two and 20 months.

“We are talking and in a few months we will see if the new competition will be open for everyone. The process will be open and transparent, as was the meeting with UEFA.

'Ugly and disrespectful' Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson slammed by former Man City defender

“The dialogue will be open for all the clubs and we will look for a fair system for football and for European clubs, without forgetting all the parties. We are the centrepiece of world football and we must drive change.”

Liverpool lost the Champions League final against Real Madrid last year but have the chance to make up for that this term.

The Reds have made it to the last eight of the competition this season and face FC Porto in the quarter-finals next month.
