New St Pauls murals encouraging people to take a less polluted route

A colourful transformation of murals and a recreation of three community hubs are tranforming the St Pauls area in a bid to promote healthy living.

The main aim of The Green Way project is to reconnect St Pauls Learning Centre, the Adventure Playground and Halston Drive Community Room with their green spaces.

During lockdown more than 200 people engaged with the ‘What is Your Soul Food?’ project, an online competition through where neighbours shared recipes.

The recipes submitted during the digital campaign have now gone on to inspire permanent artworks on the Green Way which reflect and celebrate the diversity and culinary heritage of the area.

The three recipes selected are Amina’s Samosas, Glen’s Ackee and Saltfish and Tara’s Dolma.

One of the winners of the competition, Tara Miran said having her Kurdish Dolma recipe as a permanent feature in their local community is a “recognition of [her] culture” and her “Kurdish roots.”

The final stage of the process will feature infrastructure changes to connect existing community hubs to their green spaces.

Georgina Bolton, Project Lead for The Architecture Centre said: “We want to inspire people to walk and cycle through St Pauls whilst transforming local social and community businesses and creating places to gather and play.”

They also hope that the route will encourage pedestrians to take a less polluted route through St Pauls - in a time when engaging with green spaces and their value has never been so important.

Graft, a local art collective, has begun painting the murals inspired by the local community.
