New Spurs stadium: First test officially a success as club gets pass after meeting requirements

Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium passed its first test and met the requirements from the relevant authorities for its first test event on Sunday, football.london understands.

The club have this week been selling tickets for the planned opening Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday April 3, which will be preceded by an opening ceremony.

Much of the confidence around those ticket sales have come because the stadium's first test event, the U18s' 3-1 victory against Southampton, last weekend was a success and the stadium passed its first test in showing that it could host a football match.

There were 28,897 fans at the test event, above the 25,000 minimum required, and the supporters used all the basic elements of the stadium required to hold a game, including the seats, concourses, toilets, entrances and exits, stairs, elevators, food and drink outlets and many more areas of the ground.

The enormous ground met the criteria it needed to for that U18s game and will now hold a second test event on Saturday. That is a Spurs Legends match against Inter Milan, kicking off at 5.30pm, and will be played in front of a crowd of around 45,000 people.

If, as expected, that also meets all of the required criteria then a formal safety certificate will be issued from Haringey Council which means Tottenham can open the full 62,062 seats to welcome Palace on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klinsmann, David Ginola, Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane are among the stars from Spurs' past returning for the Legends match on Saturday.

Former Tottenham and England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been hinting heavily that he will also be involved on the turf at the new stadium during the course of the afternoon.
