New sports centre will become 'hub for the local community'

A sports centre featuring football pitches, yoga classes and soft play areas is coming to Wirral next year.

The company behind the plans- Activity for All- say the 3,000-square-metre site will promote ‘active families’, given it offers a variety of activities suitable for all kinds of people.

Should planning permission be granted, the centre at Arrowe Commercial Park in Upton , will open in April of next year.

Mike Smethurst, director of Activity for All, said: “This project excites us a lot and it is something that the area needs.

“We want to make the Activity for All centre a hub for the local community and something for all the family.

“We have been working closely with a number of partners including the Football Foundation, Football Association and Sport England to ensure that the facility caters for everyone’s needs.”

The country’s favourite sport is at the heart of Mr Smethurst’s plans, as the new centre will have 7-a-side and 5-a-side indoor 3G football pitches, allowing Wirral's teams to play football throughout the year regardless of the weather.

But the centre’s offering goes much further than that. It will also contain a soft play area, a climbing area, a multi-use studio and a café.

The multi-use studio will host yoga, dance and fitness classes, among other things.

Activity for All has delivered similar community facilities elsewhere in the North West and North Wales. They have sports centres in Bootle and Holywell.

The company was founded in 2004 as a Merseyside-based community interest organisation with the sole objective to increase physical activity across all age groups.

They currently run activities for over 10,000 children and adults every week across Merseyside and work closely with over 300 schools and 150 businesses, as well as NHS trusts, colleges and other community groups.
