The traffic police of three urban commissionerates - Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda - are planning to set a new speed limit for vehicles passing through the main roads in the capital.
Accordingly, all the stakeholders held a meeting and discussed the issue. Officials said that they have also discussed imposing different speed limits for different vehicles.
For instance, a car can go up to 60 km per hour speed while the speed limit was fixed at 50 km for buses on the city roads. If any vehicle contravenes the new set limit, they shall be liable to be fined and prosecuted, officials said.
In a joint meeting held by Traffic, RTA, R&B, NHAI, GHMC, HMDA officials and engineering officials of Secunderabad Cantonment Board, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) AV Ranganath stressed the need to scientifically assess fixing speed limits for various types of vehicles, Including two-wheelers, cars, autos and buses.
Mr. Raghunath said that 80 km has been fixed as the maximum speed on the PVNR Expressway while on the Nehru Outer Ring Road, the speed limit is 100 kms per hour. The permitted speed limit is 35 kms in the lanes and bylanes within GHMC. No vehicle shall be allowed to speed over 35 km per hour.
The police have also brought in some changes in the levy of fines for confirming the speed regulations. At present, any two-wheeler or bus which crosses the speed limit prescribed has will be fined ₹1000 for violation, but according to new regulations, traffic officials are contemplating to impose less fines for two wheeler and charge heavy penalties on heavy goods vehicles.
The official said that if any vehicle is found speeding more than the maximum permitted speed limit by 10 km., 20 km., and 30 km., they will be charged a differential penalty.
