New speed camera locations in Swansea and what they'll ticket you for

A host of new speed cameras are set to go live in Swansea though some of them have already been in place for years prior to being switched on. GoSafe, the Wales road casualty reduction partnership, work with the highways authorities to enforce safety camera schemes.

From Monday, June 26, many more will switched on across south Wales. You can read more about that by clicking here. It is South Wales Police which hosts the central ticket office who administer offences recorded on the cameras across mid and south Wales.

As for Swansea in particular the new cameras include a mixture of speed cameras and ‘speed on green’ cameras at traffic lights. They are "multi-functional cameras" and have the ability to capture both red light and speeding offences. According to GoSafe the scheme aims to "make roads safer for everyone and improve the behaviour of the minority of drivers breaking the speed limit".

It has been a long time coming for some of the cameras to be operational. We reported in 2021 how a mystery IT issue was blamed for the hold up. The digital fixed cameras in Carmarthen Road, installed as part of a £455,000 initiative to improve road safety, haven’t worked since they were installed in June 2018.

GoSafe had previously said the reason for the delay is down to the installation of technology, testing of the equipment, establishing communications links, ensuring back office capabilities, and training staff to process the data. And it then told WalesOnline that an "unanticipated IT issue" led to further delays. A spokesman for GoSafe said: “An unanticipated IT issue was identified which South Wales Police are working diligently to resolve. We will update the public in advance of the cameras going live."

But now they are finally set to be switched on. Below, we've listed the locations where the cameras can be found and the type of camera they are.
