Spain are asking to access the UK's vehicle owner database in order to chase up holiday makers with fines after they leave the country.
With the summer approaching, ABTA, the UK’s largest travel association has said that the European country will be the most popular destination for tourists in 2022.
Some 29.3% of people surveyed say that their plan is to spend the summer in Spain, and many holiday makers will look to rent a car during their stay.
The Echo reports that Spain are looking to pursue a new rule that would allow them to fine holidaymakers after they have returned to the UK for speeding during their stay.
According to UK insiders no other country had made this demand and that Spain could already request information on a case-by-case basis.
María José Aparicio, a representative of Spain's DGT driver and vehicle licensing authority told the Telegraph “This situation was provoked by Britain leaving the EU. We expect a bit more of an effort to reach a deal."
She added that she feels Britain is “dragging its feet” in exchanging driver databases.
This comes as Madrid refused to extend interim rules allowing British long-term residents of Spain to drive in the country with their UK licences last week. This has left many Brits living in more rural areas stranded.
On the situation Ms Aparicio “The plan is that once they have been able to apply for the swap, hopefully in a few weeks, they can start driving again while the application is processed.”
The driving licence dispute will effect long term residents, but does not apply to holidaymakers.
