New Spanish Covid travel rules mean big changes for UK tourists - check them here

Tourists to the popular Spanish islands may now be subject to additional Covid restrictions as some locations saw rules tightened in recent days as cases surged.

The Balearic Islands - Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera - which are holiday hotspots for the Brits are currently at the Spanish level three.

While Tenerife - one of the Canary Islands - has shot up to the highest level four.

The stricter level 4 rules means pubs and restaurants will all shut at midnight and public transport is capped at 75 percent capacity.

A maximum of six people are now allowed to meet (either indoors or outdoors), nightclubs are capped at 25 percent capacity, and vaccine passports must be shown to enter some indoor venues.

Spas, jacuzzies and saunas must now remain closed, while outdoor pools operate at 33 percent of capacity and beaches at 50 percent and “a prior appointment may be required” for some venues, according to the tourist boards for the various islands.

The other Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Graciosa, are all stable at level 3.

And La Gomera and El Hierro remain at level 2.

The level 3 restrictions still mean beaches can only be 50% full and you may need an appointment to visit one.

Bars and restaurants can stay open until 1am in level 3, but you can still only meet as a maximum of six in a group.

Tenerife recorded 3,573 new cases on Tuesday, January 11, according to its government website.

The average incidence per 100,000 people over the past 14 days in the Canary Islands is now 1,453.

These levels remain in place until next Wednesday - January 20 - when they will be reviewed.
