New Spain law that all holidaymakers need to know before Easter getaways

Spain have passed a new law that will affect all travellers and locals who head to cafes, restaurants and bars in the country.

All bars and restaurants in the holiday hotspot are now required by law to offer free tap water as an alternative to bottled water - that customers would have to pay for.

The rule came into action on April 11 and comes as the country encourages people to reduce the consumption of plastics, especially plastic bottles, reports Glasgow Live.

New regulations in the Law on Waste and Contaminated Soil for a Circular Economy state: "Establishments in the hotel and restaurant sector will always have to offer consumers, customers or users of their services the possibility of consuming unpackaged water free of charge and complementary to the offer of the same establishment."

Up until now, businesses could choose whether they want to offer tap water and could decide whether to charge for it or not.

Water fountains are also being encouraged to be installed so that visitors and locals can refill their reusable bottles throughout the day.
