New South Ayrshire super school with swimming pool gets green light

A new super school to replace Carrick Academy got the green light after landing Scottish Government funding.

The mega Maybole campus could boast a swimming pool and would be home to the high school, three primaries and a nusery.

The plan is for Cairn and Gardenrose primaries to merge. St Cuthbert’s Primary will also have a new base on the site. A nursery is also among the proposals. And there is to be two all weather pitches for rugby and football.

Councillor Brian Connolly said: “It is fantastic news and it is all guns blazing now to go ahead and start planning.

“All the funding is in place. We will up the level of consultation.

“It is one of the things the town has been crying out for over many years.”

It is understood construction could start next summer on the estimated £42 million venture.
South Ayrshire Council will fund 50 per cent of the cost while the Scottish Government is providing the other half.

Speaking after the announcement, Councillor Connolly said: “We were confident we would get it but couldn’t count our chickens.”

It is estimated there would be about 1,370 children on the campus.

Morgan Sindall Construction is in line to carry out the building work.
