New skate ramp is hit with kids

A new skate ramp has been unveiled in Kincaidston.

And it’s already proving popular as youngsters couldn’t wait to get their hands on the new equipment at Kincaidston Play Park, as they clambered on it just minutes after contractors had driven off.

The ramp acts as a barrier between the park and football pitch without putting up a fence, an idea developed by Ayr East councillor Chris Cullen.

Cllr Cullen said: “The installation of the skate ramp was an idea I had to break up the Play Park area and the Football pitches.

“This was a problem point for a lot of parents who brought their kids to the park and had the experience of unleashed dogs running through.

“I recognised that Kincaidston already had some grind rails beside the MUGA and that these weren’t sited in a convenient or accessible place.

“So I decided to try and find a way to combine this with the Play Park.

“That’s when the ramp idea came in.

The ramp has been a year in the waiting for Kincaidston kids after getting the go ahead from a successful site survey and safety check.

Cllr Cullen said: “The ramp had a very warm welcome from the local kids.

“The contractors had only just driven off and there was a crowd of kids gathered on it.

“As it is a new piece of equipment it’s going to be very popular - hopefully it stays as popular.

He added it will benefit the community as a whole.

Cllr Cullen said: “It can be used by skates, skateboards, scooters and bikes - it’s a great piece of equipment.

“A lot of the older kids chill out here at night also, just sitting on the top chatting.

“So far further additions will be the grind rails.

“But working with the Community Council, Kincaidston Community Centre and the local residents, I’m sure funding could be raised to build projects for much more.”
