New sites found as authorities investigate illegal chemical waste dump near Kaniva

Victoria's environment watchdog has identified 10 new sites where it suspects chemical waste has been illegally dumped on a rural property in the state's west.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been investigating illegal dumping near Kaniva since July 2018, and initially found 20 sites where the waste had been buried.

Nine newspapers have reported up to 50 million litres of chemical waste could be buried at the Kaniva property.

However, the EPA's north-west regional manager, Scott Pigdon, said the figure was closer to five million litres.

Dr Pigdon said an additional 10 small sites had been discovered and would be inspected further.

"The site is remote, complex and very large," he said.

"All [of the new sites] are small in size and all underground locations make up about 0.2 per cent of the [566-hectare] property."

The property is on the Kaniva-Edenhope Road, about 15 kilometres from Kaniva.

It is owned by Graham Leslie White, who late last year was charged by WorkSafe for allegedly stockpiling chemicals in Melbourne's north.

Dr Pigdon said the EPA was building roads on the property to prepare for future works.

"These roads will stop trucks and heavy machinery from getting bogged in the sandy soils," he said.

"We are now planning for more site stabilisation works to be completed over the coming months."

There were initial worries from the community that the chemicals could get into Kaniva's water supply, but so far testing has shown no contamination to groundwater.
