The shimenawa rope at Miho Shrine's gate was replaced for the first time in 16 years on Saturday in Matsue, as parishioners and visitors watched the work progress.
The rope was replaced using about 800,000 yen donated by parishioners, and the work marked the completion of the relocation of about 10 small subsidiary shrines that took five years.
A subsidiary shrine relocation committee made up of shrine parishioners tasked the Suga shimenawa preservation association in Unnan, Shimane Prefecture, to carry out the work. Association members used stepladders and other equipment to attach the 400-kilogram rope to a position about three meters high.
"We're relieved that the project was completed on schedule," a committee member said. "We hope that visitors to the shrine will feel refreshed when they pass under the new rope."
