The new park and ride facility at Shieldmuir train station is now operational.
In March, it was confirmed that the construction of the long-awaited car park on the vacant land next to the station had successfully concluded and the process of Taylor Wimpey formally handing over the site to Network Rail was close to completion.
Developer Taylor Wimpey has now advised that ownership has been transferred to Network Rail.
The formal handover of the park and ride means that Network Rail is now responsibile for the operation and maintenance of the facility.
The park and ride was a condition of the original consent for the housing surrounding the train station, with planning applications to construct the facility submitted to the council in both May 2010 and January 2017.
Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councillor Nathan Wilson said: “I have now received confirmation from Taylor Wimpey that the formal handover process has been completed.
“The previous difficulties that emerged with establishing a car park on the land are well documented and the conclusion of the handover process is a hugely significant moment for the project.
“The park and ride has been over ten years in the making and local residents have been fantastic in pushing the initiative forward.
“One of the key objectives of my term as a councillor was to ensure the car park would finally be delivered after more than a decade of frustration and delay.
“It’s brilliant news that there is finally a Shieldmuir park and ride that can be used by local people and commuters at the train station.”
