New #shearisolation challenge asks people to shave off their hair to support local farmers

A new haircut challenge has been launched in efforts to raise funds for struggling Scottish farmers during the coronavirus outbreak.

Created by Scene and Herd, the 'shear isolation' challenge ask people to take part with any kind of hair removal, whether it be shaving their heads, beards, fringes or clipping their dogs.

After videoing the process and using the hashtag 'shearisolation' on social media, participants are asked to donate a minimum of £3 to one of three farming charities dedicated to supporting local farms during the current pandemic.

Anna Davies, Director of Scene & Herd said:

“After a number of Zoom video calls lately, I’ve noticed that there were a few people, my husband included, who were in need of a trip to the hairdresser! So, remembering the Ice Bucket Challenge of a few years ago, I had the idea that people could get a haircut and raise money for good causes at the same time. Thankfully, my husband was happy to be volunteer number one and allowed me to shave his hair off – all for a good cause.

“The video is now online, and we encourage people all over Scotland to get involved too.

"There is no need to wait to be nominated – start your own chain and get shearing now! You can be as inventive as you like! Just remember to make a charity donation and to use the hashtag #shearisolation whenever you post to social media.

“This is not just a challenge for men – ladies can trim their fringe, cut the kids’ hair, give the dog a haircut or even go the whole hogg if they are brave enough!

“All three of these charities are playing a key part during lockdown – RHET have been providing amazing resources to help homeschooling parents, RSABI are continuing a range of support services, particularly with regard to isolation or financial hardship and The Trussell Trust are providing food banks nationwide.

“Please join in with the #shearisolation challenge so that we can support these great charities during what is a very tough time for many.”

The three charities that the challenge is fundraising for all revolve around farming. The RSABI focus on relieving hardship and poverty amongst those whose livelihoods depend on the land. The RHET aids young people develop food literacy, working with farmers and educators, and the Trussell Trust is a well-known nationwide charity to stop hunger across the nation.
