New self isolation rules coming into force next week

Major changes regarding self isolation are set to be introduced next week.

From August 16, anyone double jabbed across Britain who has came into close contact with someone testing positive for coronavirus, will no longer need to self-isolate for 10 days.

People will instead be encouraged to take a PCR test to prove they are negative.

The change comes after last month's ‘Pingdemic’, which saw more than half a million people asked to isolate, causing chaos in a number of industries.

A number of industries have reported staff shortages, including the hospitality industry which was particularly hard hit with a number of restaurants and bars having to close due to the current self-isolation rules.

England is the third UK nation to remove self-isolation rules, following Wales who introduced the change last week, and Scotland who introduced it on Monday.

In order to avoid isolating, you must have had your second jab two weeks prior. This is in order to ensure your vaccine has taken full effect.

Under 18s will also be exempt from isolating, in a move which has been brought in to ensure young people no longer miss out on their education after two years of turmoil for the education sector.

Anyone no longer needing to isolate will be advised and encouraged to take a PCR test, but it will not be a legal requirement. Anyone testing positive from a PCR test will still be required to self-isolate for 10 days.

This is the second change to isolation rules in England this month after other minor tweaks were brought in on August 2.

The previous change meant that people coming into close contact with an asymptomatic Covid positive will only now be asked to self-isolate if they’ve seen them within two days, instead of five.

Health secretary Sajid Javid said that this change was made to “reduce the disruption” caused by self-isolation laws.

Some double jabbed workers in a number of industries are already exempt from self-isolation after the government allowed them to apply after staff shortages caused problems in the past month.

16 sectors were given the opportunity to apply. These include food production, essential transport, and border control.

Currently, you are legally required to self-isolate if contacted by the NHS and asked to do so, however, it is not a legal requirement if you are only ‘pinged’ by the NHS Covid-19 app.

75% of the population are now fully vaccinated and will no longer need to self-isolate from August 16.
