New Scottish wind projects to power Tesco stores

Two new wind generation projects are to be built in Scotland on the back of a major deal to supply green energy to Tesco.

EDF Renewables has signed three corporate power purchase agreements covering the output from two Scottish wind farms and 17 roof-mounted solar installations in England. The deals come days after Amazon announced what is thought to be the largest corporate wind power agreement to date in the UK to buy power from a wind farm on the Kintyre Peninsula.

To support the Tesco supply contracts, EDF Renewables will extend the existing Burnfoot wind farm in Clackmannanshire with three new turbines with a total installed capacity of 10.8 MW. The extension is expected to be completed mid-2020.

Another wind farm with a capacity of around 43 MW will also be built in Scotland with details to be announced later.

Jason Tarry, chief executive of Tesco UK, said: “Our supply chain and long-term business sustainability depend on the health of the natural environment. Our customers and colleagues expect Tesco to play its part in caring for the planet. This project represents a major milestone in our journey to using 100% renewable electricity by 2030.”

EDF Renewables UK chief executive Matthieu Hue said: “We are very pleased to be working with Tesco which is already one of EDF’s biggest customers in the UK. These projects show the ability of EDF to provide diverse solutions for customers in terms of low cost renewable electricity.

“These exciting projects also demonstrate our ability to develop subsidy free solar and wind in the UK as well as underpinning the important part these technologies play in decarbonising the UK electricity system to reach the country’s net zero targets by 2050.”
