New Scottish Tory leader admits 2021 election defeat on his first day in the job

MP Douglas Ross has been named the new leader of the Scottish Conservatives after no other contenders for the top job put their name forward.

He was installed without an election as his candidacy was unopposed.

But hours into the new job, Ross was accused of a gaffe after he appeared to concede in next years Scottish Parliament elections.

In an interview, Ross said he hoped he would lead a "strong opposition" to the SNP at Holyrood.

He said: “My 100% commitment is representing the people of Scotland and I can do that effectively, both in Westminster as an MP, and with a strong team at Holyrood, that after the next election when I hope to be returned to Holyrood I hope to lead a strong, united Conservative Party which will provide that scrutiny and opposition to the SNP that we need in Scotland.”

Ross has asked former leader and Edinburgh Central MSP Ruth Davidson to "step up" for him at First Minister's Questions as he does not currently hold a seat in the Scottish Parliament.

The Moray MP is expected to seek a seat in Holyrood at next year's election, although he has not said where he would stand, the Daily Record reported.

Previously an MSP between 2016 and 2017, Mr Ross represented the Highlands and Islands region before beating SNP depute leader Angus Robertson for the Moray seat at Westminster.
