New Scottish lockdown restrictions set to be imposed this week

Lanarkshire residents will "almost certainly" face new coronavirus restrictions in the next few days.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed at her daily briefing today that the Scottish Government is "preparing to introduce" new measures across Scotland in a bid to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

During the past week, the NHS Lanarkshire area has recorded 293 confirmed cases of coronavirus; compared to just 176 in the whole of August.

Both North and South Lanarkshire, along with five neighbouring council areas including Glasgow, are currently under extended restrictions which prevent indoor visits to other households.

Ms Sturgeon wouldn't confirm the types of restrictions the government were considering, but did say she would be speaking to Prime Minister Boris Johnston today.

A UK-wide COBRA meeting will take place and Ms Sturgeon said she was willing to allow more time before introducing any new restrictions to allow for discussions to take place between the four nations.

The First Minister said: "We are preparing to introduce a package of additional measures with the intention of bringing the R number back below one.

"I will be equally clear that the urgency of this situation means we cannot, must not, and will not, wait too long.

"Additional restrictions will almost certainly be put in place in Scotland over the next couple of days."
