New Scottish Lib Dems leader to be announced today after Willie Rennie steps down

The Scottish Liberal Democrats will have a new leader by the end of today after a contest was sparked following the resignation of Willie Rennie.

MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton is widely expected to take over.

The party slumped to just four seats at the last Holyrood election earlier this year and there had been speculation that Rennie would quit.

He eventually announced his resignation as leader on July 12 after leading the party through three UK general elections, two Holyrood elections, as well as the 2014 independence referendum.

Rennie led the party for just over 10 years after preceding Tavish Scott as leader.

Announcing his resignation, he said: "It is time for a fresh face to lead our party forward.

"The new l eader will have my full support in writing the next bright chapter of the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ story."

So, here is all you need to know about the Lib Dems race:

Who are the contenders?

It's not really contenders, it's contender.

Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton is the only member of the Holyrood group to put his name into the hat to be leader.

According to Lib Dem rules the leader has to be a member of the Scottish Parliament.

The other MSPs, Liam McArthur and Beatrice Wishart, didn't put their names forward after Cole-Hamilton entered the contest on July 28.

What time is the announcement?

An announcement will be made by the party at around 3pm today with the new leader expected to give a speech following the result.

The MSP will then by quizzed by the media about what he or she intends to do to get more Lib Dems in Holyrood and in council chambers following the elections next year.
