As the new coronavirus is spreading in Tokyo, the Tokyo metropolitan government's board of education is considering extending the period during which public high schools in the capital are closed.
The metropolitan board of education is considering postponing the reopening of the schools, which were originally scheduled to begin in early April, until around the Golden Week holiday in May.
The board of education, which plans to decide on the matter as early as Wednesday, is also expected to urge elementary and junior high schools run by wards, cities, towns and villages in Tokyo to consider prolonging their school shutdowns in line with each locality's circumstances.
At the request of the central government, metropolitan high schools and combined junior high and high schools were temporarily closed on March 2. Currently, the schools are closed for spring vacation.
The metropolitan board of education earlier instructed the schools to make preparations for resuming classes and drew up measures for students to avoid rush hour when commuting, such as by delaying the start of classes and splitting school days between grades.
However, a sharp increase in the number of people who have tested positive for the virus in Tokyo in recent days forced the board of education to reconsider how to deal with the situation.
