New school and nursery to be built in Ayr as part of South Ayrshire Council budget

A new school and nursery are to be built in Ayr and two high schools will get a makeover.

South Ayrshire Council revealed plans to replace St John’s Primary and erect a new Wallacetown nursery at a cost of about £16 million.

Both buildings would be constructed on the same site at St John’s.

The council plans to splash out on the new builds in 2027 and 2028.

Kyle and Girvan Academies are both due to get refurbishment works.

Today the council approved its day-to day budget of £279.6 million for the year ahead.

Council tax is to increase by nearly five per cent (4.84), which is the maximum amount.

The new council tax rise will bring in £60.8 million.

Speaking at full council today, council leader Douglas Campbell said: “The proposed increase will not be popular but it is necessary to avoid making cuts, which could devastate our communities.”

He said the council is spending on “things that really matter and will make a difference to our communities.”

Finance bosses are dipping into £1 million reserves to balance the budget.

A number of cuts have also been approved including the loss of jobs but no council employee will have to take compulsory redundancy.  Vacant posts are not being filled.

The  revenue budget was put forward by the  ruling SNP, Labour and Independent councillors and was supported by Conservative politicians.

Councillor Martin Dowey (Conservative leader) said his group did not put forward an opposition budget because they did not want to take up officers’ time preparing other options.

Cuts include the loss of jobs and the price of school meals going up.
