New scam affecting thousands of Irish people as gardai warn about fraudsters using 087 number

Another scam has made it's way into Ireland as thousands of people are getting calls from an 087 number which tells them that the call is from Gardaí.

Following an increase in phishing and 083 scam calls, the gardai and Department of Social Protection have recently increased the number of public campaigns and warnings they've issued to alert the public.

But the addition of a new scam number has meant another one of those warnings has had to be given to the public.

Anyone who answers the call from the number is then told that their PPS number has been deleted.

And it's led officers in Kilkenny to say the following: "Gardaí in Kilkenny have received a number of reports of yet another phone scam. In this case, an 087 number (many different ones) rings the person and an automated recording tells them that they are ringing from An Garda Síochána and their PPS number has been suspended. This is a scam. DO NOT ENGAGE, END CALL IMMEDIATELY."

Earlier in June, Gardai issued a warning to all Android mobile phone users against the spyware software 'FluBot' which has been affecting Android devices across the country.

Scammers will send a text message, tempting victims to click a link to schedule a missed package delivery. If you click the link, you will be brought to a fake website that replicates a legitimate delivery company.

Described as a “sophisticated scam” by Vodafone, Facebook users have said that clicking the link took them to a bogus DHL, UPS, Amazon or Royal Mail website. Some text messages even mentioned their full name in an attempt to appear legit.

While Gardai have issued the warning to Android users, some iOS iPhone users have also reported the scam texts.
