New salon 'won't affect' South Shields and Jarrow hair and beauty businesses

Plans for a hair and beauty salon at a South Tyneside social club have been given the go-ahead.

Earlier in April, plans were lodged with South Tyneside Council for Jordan’s Social Club, off Marine Drive, in the Hebburn area.

This included the partial change of use of an existing storage room to a salon and external works such as the installation of a new window and a new entrance doorway with an access ramp.

The application came from The Hospitality Co. NE Ltd and after considering submissions, South Tyneside Council planners approved the scheme on June 1, 2021.

A council decision report said the proposed salon would provide a service to the local community and would not have any impact on neighbours.

The report reads: “The proposed use would provide a local service to serve a small catchment area within close proximity of a local neighbourhood shopping centre; and would complement the existing uses.

“Taking into account the existing commercial leisure use of the building, as well as the small size and proposed use of the unit; it is considered that the proposal would represent an appropriate form of sustainable development in this location.

“[It would] provide an additional service for the local community and would not detract from the vitality and viability of any of the borough’s main shopping centres at South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn.”

Planners added that the development was based in a sustainable location and was close to homes, public transport and public car parking.

The report goes on to say: “Taking this into account, as well as the small size of the new unit and likely level of trip numbers that would be generated by the development, it is judged that [the application] would be acceptable in relation to highway capacity and safety.”

According to its website, Jordan’s Social Club is a family-friendly venue offering games such as snooker, pool and darts, two function rooms for hire and events such as bands, line dancing and karaoke.

Under council planning conditions, work on the proposed hair and beauty salon must be brought forward within the next three years.
