New salmon 'taxi' for Southern Tasmania

The Ronja Huon has been built in Norway to transport salmon in Southern Tasmania.

Tasmanian salmon company Huon Aquaculture is continuing its expansion plans with a 76-metre-long vessel to work their Southern Tasmanian fish farms.

The $85 million well-boat is the first of its kind in Tasmania and will be used to transport salmon and to bath fish.

Huon Aquaculture's CEO Peter Bender says the well-boat can carry 3,000 tonnes of fresh water to transport live, adult and baby fish and to bath salmon as a means of preventing amoebic gill disease.

He expects the well-boat will reduce the number of tows on their farms by over one-thousand a year.

Leased from it's Norwegian builder, the Ronja Huon will also allow Huon Aquaculture to continue to shift its fish farms further offshore.
