New rules on face masks as Plan B introduced

Face masks will be mandatory in more venues following the confirmation that Plan B restrictions are being introduced across the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the news at a press conference on Wednesday (December 8) evening.

He said mandatory mask wearing will be extended to public places like cinemas and theatres from Friday, December 10.

It comes after masks were made mandatory in shops and on public transport last week following the news that the omicron variant had been detected in Nottingham.

The Prime Minister warned it is clear the new strain is “growing much faster” than the Delta variant and cases of Omicron could be doubling every two or three days as he strengthened England’s rules to slow the spread of Covid-19.

Mr Johnson told the press briefing in Downing Street: “There will of course be exemptions where it is not practical, such as when eating, drinking, exercising or singing.”

It came after he said it was time to activate the Government's 'Plan B' measures to tackle Covid-19 this winter.

He also told people to work from home if they can from Monday, and said vaccine passports will also be introduced.
