New rules mean Monklands residents facing homelessness will get more support

Monklands residents facing homelessness will have better access to crucial support with new legislation coming into effect later this year.

Last year, the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Group recommended changes to homelessness laws, and analysis of consultation responses published recently show support for the measures.

The first change, which will come into effect later this year, will remove the current duty on North Lanarkshire Council to assess whether a homelessness application is intentional.

This will make receiving support easier for people who have difficulties in their every day lives, such as financial or mental health issues.

Scottish Government ministers also announced plans to remove the requirement for people facing homelessness to demonstrate a connection to a council area before they can receive support from that local authority.

Housing Minister Kevin Stewart commented: “We want to make sure that anyone facing homelessness is supported into permanent, settled accommodation that meets their needs as quickly as possible.”
