New rules mean applicants for US visas will have to submit their social media details

The State Department regulations in the USA say people looking to apply for visas to the country will soon have to submit social media details.

The BBC reports that nearly all applicants who want US visas will have to do this soon.

The information they'll have to submit includes social media names and five years' worth of email addresses and phone numbers.

When proposed last year, authorities estimated the proposal would affect a gigantic 14.7 million people annually.

People who will be exempt from this include diplomatic and official visa applicants. Those looking to travel for pleasure or relocate for work will not be so lucky though.

The move has been advocated by The Trump Administration.

“National security is our top priority when adjudicating visa applications, and every prospective traveller and immigrant to the United States undergoes extensive security screening,” the State Department said. “We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect US citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United States.”

Collecting the additional information from more applicants “will strengthen our process for vetting these applicants and confirming their identity," it added.

Previously, only applicants who needed additional vetting - such as people who had been to parts of the world controlled by terrorist groups - would need to hand over this data.
