New rules for pubs in Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly as more local lockdowns announced by Welsh Government

Pubs and bars in Caerphilly will not be able to stay open past 11pm under new rules.

Health minister Vaughan Gething today announced local lockdowns for Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport.

As part of these restrictions all licensed premises in these areas will have to close at 11pm.

Caerphilly was the first part of Wales to go into lockdown and did not have this restriction on licensed premises. In order to keep constancy across local lockdown areas this restriction will also be applied to Caerphilly.

This means that all bars and pubs will have to close at 11am.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr Gething said: "Because of the developing situation in these four local authority areas, we will be introducing local restrictions in these local authority areas from 6pm tomorrow.

"This will mean a large part of the population of South Wales – and the South Wales Valleys – will be subject to local coronavirus restrictions.

"We will hold an urgent meeting tomorrow with all local authorities, health boards and police forces in South Wales – from Swansea to the border with England – to discuss the wider regional situation and whether further measures are needed."
