New rules for pubs, bars and restaurants as Matt Hancock announces Merseyside lockdown changes

Households are no longer allowed to mix in any indoor setting including pubs, bars or restaurants, Matt Hancock confirmed this morning.

Speaking in the House of Commons, he made the much anticipated announcement after coronavirus cases continue to rise in the city.

Liverpool and the whole of Merseyside was previously placed in local lockdown which put a 10pm curfew on hospitality businesses and people were banned from gathering in groups of more than six.

However, under these new stricter measures those who plan on visiting a pub, bar or restaurant or any indoor setting must only do so with those they live with, or those who are in their support bubble.

Matt Hancock called the new measures "necessary" and said "together we need to act" in a bid to control the virus.

He added: "The more people follow the rules and reduce their social contact the sooner we can get Liverpool and the North West back on their feet".

Matt Hancock says 10pm hospitality cut-off will remain under review, but defends it in principle

The ban on mixing with different households does not apply to outdoor hospitality settings or parks.

Other recommendations in today's announcements included guidance against all but essential travel which including travelling to work.
