New rules for First Bus passengers set to come into force

Bus operator First Bus is introducing new rules from next week, which will affect passengers.

The capacity of vehicles on the road will be reduced by 75 per cent from Monday, May 25.

As well as this, drivers will count passengers on and off buses.

Once the new reduced capacity has been reached, drivers will not allow anymore passengers on board.

Passengers who are able to board will be directed to use seats at an “appropriate distance” from each other, according to First Bus.

First is one of the largest bus operators in the England and Wales, operating around a fifth of local bus services in the £4.2bn deregulated marked outside London, Birmingham Live reports.

It has a fleet of more than 5,000 buses, and serves 40 of the largest towns and cities in England and Wales.

On its website, the firm says: "We continue to work with the Government and wider industry to ensure we are following the latest advice to keep our customers and staff safe on our buses.

"We recognise that buses play a significant role in many of our customers’ lives; in connecting you with communities and places of work. We remain focused on continuing to serve you, wherever and whenever it is safe and operationally possible for us to do so.

"Following on from Government’s publication of its ‘safer transport’ guidance for operators, we are finalising social distancing plans and will be introducing safe capacities across our fleet."

It adds: "These measures will be introduced across our buses to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers during Covid19. Thank you so much for your ongoing support, which is essential as we work together to maintain safe travel across our networks."
