New RTE series will celebrate The Van, The Snapper and The Commitments

Colm Meaney will present a new three-part RTE documentary that celebrates the legacy of Roddy Doyle’s iconic Barrytown trilogy.

Three decades since Alan Parker's movie adaptation of The Commitments became a global phenomenon, Meaney will embrace his inner Dessie Curley/Jimmy Rabbitte as he explores the fictional world of Barrytown, specifically "the people who populated it, the real lives that inspired it and those who helped create it".

I suppose a rise is out of the question then.

Anyway, the new RTÉ series will discuss Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy of books - The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van - and the iconic films they inspired.

Titled Back to Barrytown, the three-part documentary series starts on 16 May and will run for consecutive Sundays.

The show's synopsis states: "Back to Barrytown is a series of three documentaries that will focus on the stories, themes and characters of each of the three books, capturing the fanciful daydreams of escape and prosperity and the down-to-earth realities of family, friendship and community."

Aside from Meaney, the series will feature interviews with many of the well-known and some of the not so well-known cast and crew from the trilogy including Brendan O’Carroll, Angeline Ball, Robert Arkins, Ruth Mc Cabe, Mark Geraghty, Stephen Frears, John and Ros Hubbard, and many more.

To coincide with the series, RTÉ One will also be airing The Commitments on Saturday, May 22 after the Eurovision final and The Snapper on Saturday, 29 May at 9.30pm.

We reckon it's going to be A1.
