The head of the Royal Navy was today appointed the next chief of Britain’s armed forces as Boris Johnson pushes ahead with a global Britain foreign policy which has threatened to put him on a collision course with China.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, First Sea Lord, will become the first head of the Navy to be promoted to the most senior post in the UK’s military in 20 years when the current Chief of the Defence Staff general Sir Nick Carter stands down later this year.

His appointment comes amid rising tensions with China over Britian’s new alliance with the US and Australia to help the Australians build nuclear powered submarines.

Defence sources said Sir Tony had a “big hand” in delivering the so-called AUKUS partnership, which has also upset the French.

Confirming Sir Tony’s appointment this morning, the Prime Minister said: “This Government has made a clear commitment to create the Armed Forces of the future, establishing the biggest defence investment programme since the Cold War. Admiral Tony will lead the Armed Forces at a time of incredible change.”
