New Royal line of succession amid confusion over Archie and Lilibet's title

The new royal line of succession following the death of Queen Elizabeth II has been confirmed, sparking some confusion over the titles that will be given to Harry and Meghan's children. King Charles III has now acceded to the throne following a ceremony in which he was proclaimed to the nation as head of state.

Following the change in monarch, The Royal Family's website has now been updated to reflect the new line of succession to the throne.

But despite the update reflecting new titles, such as Prince William now being referred to as The Prince of Wales, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's titles are still simply referred to as "Master and Miss" on the Royal website.

But Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is now technically a prince after the death of the Queen. Prince Harry and Meghan's youngest child, Lilibet “Lili” Mountbatten-Windsor, is also entitled to be a princess. The change comes as her her grandfather, the Prince of Wales, becomes King.

The rules set out by King George V in 1917 mean Archie and Lili – as the children of a son of a sovereign – also now have an HRH style if they choose to use it.

Harry and Meghan announced in 2020 that they were stepping back from royal duties. But following the end of a 12-month review period in March 2021, Harry and Meghan still occupy the role of Duke and Duchess of Sussex and it was expected that their children would automatically hold royal titles upon the ascension of Charles to the throne.

The new royal line of succession confirms that William, The Prince of Wales, is next in line to succeed Charles as monarch. His three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, are then next in line in order of their birth followed by Harry, The Duke of Sussex.

Harry and Meghan's son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is sixth in line, whilst their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Mountbatten-Windsor, is seventh. The Duke of York moves up to eighth place, with Andrew still being included in the line of succession despite stepping down from royal duties and settling out of court in a civil sexual assault case.

His elder daughter Princess Beatrice moves to ninth and her baby daughter Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, has become 10th in line.
