New 'Rocky Balboa' style gym hopes to bring high street back to life

A new Rocky Balboa-inspired gym has opened in the heart of Formby, with its owner keen to give the village a new lease of life.

Formby village is home to an array of shops and restaurants, as well as an increasing number of empty units.

John Youssef, who owned nearby USC gym for a decade, says he wants to see the village restored to its former glory.

His new gym, Youssef Strength, occupies the former Superdrug site on Chapel Lane.

John told the ECHO: "I grew up working in the Quo Vadis restaurant [on Chapel Lane], which was owned by my dad.

"Back then the village was buzzing and it's terrible when you compare how it is now.

"I made the decision to close the USC gym and rebrand, reopen in the village because I feel I could have a part to play in getting the old Formby back.

"The village needs some help."

The new gym sprawls across three floors, which John says are a "unique blend of high tech equipment and old school style training".

The "Rocky-style" gym downstairs has tractor tyres, sledgehammers and kettle bells, while a full gym for cardio and other exercise is on the ground floor.

There is also a fully functional training area and a supplement store.

John continued: "This gym is a step above the old one, I have put everything I have learned into this place, to make it the best it can be.

"I’m excited for the classes to start on May 17. I will be teaching the classes, everything from circuits, to boxing strength, cardio and HIIT.

"I am hoping our gym helps bring Formby village back to life.”
