New review announced into Omagh flooding protection plan

A new flood risk study will be carried out into Omagh town and how it can be better protected against flooding.

A previous study had been commissioned by the Department for Infrastructure in 2016 but no feasible plan was identified at that time.

Now, Infrastructure minister Nichola Mallon has said her department will review the study that was carried out in order to address flooding protection in the Co Tyrone town.

Several areas of the town have been subject to severe flooding in recent years.

The review is expected to begin this year, and take 12 to 18 months to complete.

““I am pleased to announce that my Department is currently engaging with our partner consultant to re-visit the most recent flood study for Omagh Town,” Nichola Mallon said.

“The Department previously carried out a flood study in 2016 to assess the level of risk to properties within Omagh and determine if a viable flood alleviation scheme could be taken forward to enhance the existing flood protection to the town.

“Unfortunately at that time no feasible option was identified which provided the necessary standard of protection.

"This is why I have asked that officials review this feasibility study taking account of revised climate change guidance and considering opportunities for natural flood risk management to determine if any viable options can now be identified to reduce flood risk and achieve the design standard of protection.”
