New Revelations About SNL’s ‘Shitty’ Working Conditions Emerge After Mass Firings

snl-revelations

We’ve been treated to even more details after Saturday Night Live’s shocking mass exodus ahead of season 51, this time courtesy of the professional tea-spiller that is Deuxmoi

Last week, it was announced that Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Emil Wakim were all departing the iconic sketch show, with SNL creator / overlord Lorne Michaels revealing plans to “shake things up” ahead of the upcoming season.

And while cast changes are part of the SNL life-cycle — it also welcomed newcomers like Veronika Slowikowska — this one in particular seemed to take fans (and talent) by surprise.

The mass firings caused a bit of a tizzy — helped along by Walker’s somewhat salty departing message — and now Deuxmoi has poured gasoline on all the hullabaloo with some juicy tidbits shared on the Deux U podcast on Thursday.

With things supposedly locked and loaded for season 51, Deuxmoi offered perhaps the juiciest morsel about SNL, claiming to have heard “in recent years” that the cast, crew and writers have “noted that it’s a shitty place to work”.

Co-host Hannah Aaron Brown agreed, claiming SNL is a “very high-stress environment” because it’s “competitive” and filled with “late nights and bad feedback”.

“A lot of tears,” Brown claimed of the SNL set.

Brown then said she had a friend who once worked at SNL, and claimed that Michaels said “some pretty mean things about their appearance” way back when.

While we always say to take Deuxmoi’s gossip tidbits with a grain of salt, they aren’t the only ones to make such claims.

In an Instagram post announcing his departure, long-time cast member Walker described it as sometimes “toxic as hell”, and later told Variety “there is a measure of humanity that the show could benefit from”.

Before that, former castmate Julia Louis-Dreyfus recalled her time on the show in the 80s as “brutal” because of the “very sexist environment”

Elsewhere, former SNL writers Clare O’Kane and Steven W Thrasher have in recent years shared their less-than-pleasant experiences while working on the sketch show.

“For most of my time at SNL, I lived in mortal terror that I would screw something up and be fired,” Thrasher wrote.

Beyond those accounts, Deuxmoi later speculated what’s in store in terms of musical guests for SNL’s 51st season, saying we should expect a “recently engaged A-lister” and a “small but scrumptious pop singer”.

I’m not the best at decoding, but that sure sounds like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter to me!

Those rumours remain unconfirmed, but I for one would love to see Swift flash her engagement ring on the SNL stage later this year.
