A new restaurant celebrating the best of the North East produce and classic British cuisine is set for its official opening.
The Greedy Gannet has been quietly open inside Beeronomy in Hood Street for a couple of weeks, but will officially launch on Friday.
Chef Lindsay Rushton leads the kitchen. He launched the Greedy Gannet after working in Jesmond Dene House and House of Tides . Lindsay brings Michelin-star kitchen experience to the Greedy Gannet, for his first head chef role.
Lindsay told ChronicleLive the menu showcases classic British cuisine, as he puts it: "Nice simple food, but done well".
Lindsay added: "The whole idea for the restaurant is everything is sourced locally and prepared on site. We want to show off the best of the North East."
The menu's starters include grilled North Sea mackerel with tomato (£6), lilliput capers, parsley and sourdough; and crispy lamb cheek, with mint and slow-cooked carrot (£7). Local produce is celebrated in the mains, too, including North Sea mussels served with white wine, cream, parsley and sourdough bread (£13); and roast Yorkshire pork loin with crackling, roast apple, mash and red wine sauce (£14).
Professional takes on classics are on the dessert menu, which includes bread and butter pudding with custard (£6) and roast apple crumble with custard (£5.50).
The Greedy Gannet is open 12-9pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and between 12 and 4pm on Sunday.
A Sunday lunch menu is served on Sundays.
