New Rangers signing Ianis Hagi calls Steven Gerrard 'one of the best in football history'

Ianis Hagi has completed his permanent move to Rangers, and it's clear that one of the motivating factors behind the Romanian's decision is his admiration for manager Steven Gerrard.

The 21-year-old made an excellent impression upon arriving at Ibrox on loan in January, and last night his parent club KRC Genk confirmed that a permanent deal had been agreed.

Gerrard will view Hagi as a key part of his side ahead of the 2020/21 season, and the midfielder spoke glowingly about the manager in Spanish newspaper Marca earlier this month.

Asked what he has been learning from Gerrard, Hagi replied: "It is impossible for me to single out one thing. I learn something different from him every day. I am lucky that I am trained by one of the best in the history of football."

Hagi wears the number 10, just as his famous father Gheorghe did, and explained "The pressure of playing with the 10 makes me a better player to perform at my highest level.

"Ever since I was a child, I always looked at 'numbers 10', the ones that made the difference. From the age of 16, I began to observe much what Zidane and Johan Cruyff had done.

"I only know one thing about myself: I always want to win and compete with the best. When I retire, we can discuss comparisons with my father."

Hagi said "I love the La Liga style of play and I see myself playing there one day", but insisted "Now I am focused on being ready if the Scottish league returns. Nothing else."
