New railcard checks to be introduced in train fare dodging crackdown

  • New validation checks for railcard discounts on train tickets will be introduced from late 2026 to combat fare dodging, aiming to save £20 million annually.
  • Passengers buying discounted tickets will need to scan their railcard or input details, with automatic verification for subsequent online purchases.
  • Refund rules for Off-Peak and Anytime tickets will tighten from next month, allowing refunds only until 11.59pm the day before travel, except for disruptions or exceptional circumstances, to curb £40 million in “refund abuse”.
  • The Department for Transport plans to streamline the Delay Repay scheme, enabling passengers to claim compensation for disrupted services directly from their point of purchase.
  • These wide-ranging changes, including merging 14 operator compensation systems, are part of reforms under Great British Railways, expected to be operational by the end of the year.
