New Queen of the South goalie admitted he knew virtually nobody at the club before signing

New Queens goalkeeper Max Currie admitted he knew virtually nobody at the club after signing on at Palmerston.

But Currie insisted that having played alongside manager Wullie Gibson previously at Stranraer made it an easy decision to join the Doonhamers.

He said: “I have to be honest and say I didn’t know a lot. I cannot lie, I only knew they got relegated.

“But I played with Wullie at Stranraer and although it is different now he is the manager, I know how he works which makes a difference when signing and I know that in training he gives 100 per cent. Last season to be honest I didn’t know much about Queens and sometimes that can benefit you when you come into a new club.

“After Wullie got the job I looked out for a few of their results but that was about it.”

Currie had a longer season than most after his old club Airdrie made it to the play-offs. But he added: “It was a longer season for me and it carried on for about another three weeks compared to other teams. But that can sometimes help you stay in your routine.

“I have played quite a few games in League One at several clubs and I know there are a lot of players coming down from the Championship and I played there a long time like Gavin Reilly so that can only stand us in good stead for the new season. It will be a very tough league now there is Airdrie, ourselves and Falkirk in there and we need to go full steam ahead and try to finish as high as we can in the table.

“It is a good group of boys here and pre-season has been tough as it always is.”

The former Diamonds shot stopper played down the fact he will be facing his old Diamonds team mates in the new season.

He added: “I don’t know if I will be looking out for the Airdrie games next season so much. It is just another game.”
